3 Cheap & Easy Anime Cosplays

Cosplaying can get pretty expensive, but here are three anime characters that shouldn’t cost you a lot of money! These might also be useful for those last minute conventions when you don’t have enough time to prepare for an elaborate cosplay.

1. Tsukimi from Princess Jellyfish

If you have medium or long black hair like me, you can tie your hair into braids. I found my grey sweater in my closet. I already had Clara, the jellyfish plush, but that’s optional. All I bought for this cosplay were the red glasses from the dollar store. It was about $1.25. Here’s a tip: Remove the lens from the glasses! I wish I did that when I took this photo because it wasn’t the right prescription and I couldn’t see clearly. Tsukimi wears grey sweatpants, but I feel that a lot of people own this already.

Total cost = $1.25

2. L Lawliet from Death Note

I bought a short black wig for $5. A wig requires a wig cap, but I already own a couple. If you are a guy or girl with short black hair, then you can skip the wig. I used black eyeliner I already had, and wore a white long sleeve shirt and jeans from my closet. The Death Note was a gift, but you can buy a plain black notebook from the dollar store and use a silver Sharpie to write the words on the cover. The only other thing I bought was the lollipop, which is an optional prop. The lollipop was around $3.

Total cost = $5 ($8 including lollipop prop)

3. Shizuo from Durarara!!

I bought the short yellow wig for around $4.90. I actually bought this one with L’s wig from the same seller but this price is rare. The rest of my wigs cost more. If you have naturally blonde hair that is short, then you can skip this step. I bought a black bow tie from Daiso for $2. I had the rest – the dress shirt, vest, pants, and shoes. Sunglasses would also be good.

Total cost = $6.90

Some words of advice:

– It boils down to how creative you are. There are many characters with simple cosplays, but it’s up to you to make it work.

– Don’t worry about the littlest details. To me, cosplaying is about having fun and there is always time to improve in the future.

– If you are on a budget, you may want to consider thrift stores. If you feel that you won’t wear the clothing item often but you need it for the cosplay, it’s definitely a cheaper alternative.

I hope this post was helpful. Have fun and good luck!

Anime Evolution 2017

I cosplayed as Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura. The sad thing is that I had gloves in my bag the whole time but forgot about them.

I have so many people to thank for making this possible! Firstly, Maya for the clothes and hat, Jilliam for the socks, Maria for doing my makeup, Maria’s friends for the ride to the convention, and Gladys for taking the photos.

I’m waiting for photos from a couple of photographers so I’m looking forward to that. I bought some pins and you can check them out here.

How to Keep Your Pins From Falling Out

So you got some pins. Now what??

Before you pin them to your bags or clothes, here’s a tip. Take a plastic earring stud back and put it on the back like so. I’ve lost all my pins from high school because I didn’t do this. Then I did this to my Lelouch (from Code Geass) pin and I still have it a year later.

If you don’t have the stud backs, I saw them at my local dollar store. No need to buy actual earrings hahaha.

If you’re interested in what my new pins are…

  • Rin and Len Kagamine
  • Luka Megurine (see clip below)
  • Karamatsu (Osomatsu-kun)
  • Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
  • Sailor Moon

Superstar Spotlight: Kwang-ho Hong

Kwang-ho Hong is one of my favourite singers. He is a musical theatre actor from South Korea. Some of his most famous works include Jekyll & Hyde, The Phantom of the Opera, Notre-Dame de Paris, Miss Saigon, and Death Note. He has starred in numerous other musicals.

A couple of years ago, I was going through a rough time and felt hatred towards all men. I came across a video of Kwang-ho Hong singing “All I Ask of You” from my favourite musical, The Phantom of the Opera (2009). I felt so moved… and decided to open my heart. I think I cried.

I started to search him online and found out that he first played Raoul in POTO. A year later, he played Erik, the Phantom. Kwang-ho Hong was one of the youngest Phantoms in the world!

I also found out that he played Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in Jekyll & Hyde. It’s one of my favourite books and “This is the Moment” is one of my favourite songs. He sings it so well. He also played Quasimodo in Notre-Dame de Paris, which is a story I like as well.

As if things were not enough, he also acted as Light Yagami from one of my favourite anime, Death Note (2015). I felt that Kwang-ho Hong and I are super alike in terms of his roles and my interests. I cannot think of any other person who is better suited to play Light.

Kwang-ho Hong is most famous for playing Thuy in Miss Saigon (2014). He went to London and sang in English for West End theatre! West End theatre is huge in the musical theatre industry.

It’s my dream to watch Kwang-ho Hong perform live in a musical. Although I do not understand Korean, I can still appreciate the music. The fact that I do not understand Korean is not too important because I can still feel the emotion he pours into his music.

I hope by doing this post, I can bring more attention to Kwang-ho Hong because he made an impact in my life. He is truly talented at performing live and his accomplishments are impressive. ❤

Vampire Knight – Yuki Cross Cosplay

Yuki Cross is a character from the anime, Vampire Knight. I actually don’t like Yuki but I don’t try to limit myself to only cosplay characters I like.

Behind the scenes:

Funny story: I got mosquito bites when I was doing this. My blood was literally sucked when I was cosplaying for a vampire anime.

Don’t worry, I have good pain tolerance.
