How Do You Watch Anime?

This is kind of a weird topic, but hear me out. I feel like we all have our own ways of enjoying anime.

My Anime Wrap Up for 2018 – A Nerdy Perspective

I confess that I skip anime opening and ending songs… It’s not really good because that means I also skip the credits. I sometimes listen to the songs but I skip them most of the time. O_O

If a part of an episode is “boring” to me, I watch it at 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x speed (it depends on how bored I am). When I am interested again, I set it back to the normal speed. I actually watch most YouTube videos (not including music) at 2x speed. This includes cooking videos, TedTalks, some vlogs, and more. I watch anime filler episodes at 2x speed. Since just about all the videos I watch have subtitles, watching at 2x speed is not an issue for me.

I watch anime in sub but that’s my personal preference. In my opinion, the whole sub vs. dub debate is so stupid.

I can’t really multitask while I watch anime. I need to give my full attention to whatever I’m watching.

I mostly watch shows by myself. I sometimes watch shows with my brother. Lately I’ve been watching The Untamed episodes over Discord voice chat with friends.

I know some people only watch shows once all the episodes are out. I’m fine with watching one episode every week. It gives me something to look forward to every week. Now that I’m staying home every day, I do binge watch shows. I couldn’t really afford to binge-watch when I was a student. Before the quarantine, I used to watch anime on public transit LOL.

Once an anime is finished, I almost never turn to the manga to continue the story. I just wait forever for season 2.

I feel like I’ve just exposed myself. Oh well. How do you watch anime?

  1. I watch the opening and close one time. I don’t need to see and hear it a dozen times. Some anime change things up, so I do watch a few seconds to make sure.

Unless the OP or ED is really good. Like Boogiepop or Nana. Those I can’t watch enough!

      • I d recommend it. Not everyone appreciates it like I do. Not your standard hero/villain anime. And there’s a lot of philosophy and an occasional monologue. I love that sort of thing, drives some people nuts. Try episode one and see if it floats your boat.

There’s an older Boogiepop from a couple decades ago. The only copy I’ve seen looks like it was digitized from an old VHS tape. I enjoyed it too but it is even less of a standard anime. It is confusing because many of the episodes are really happening in parallel. The new BP is a complete reimagining of the old one.

Both are slices from the Boogiepop manga which goes on forever. I did a blog about it, long ago.

  2. I watch the openings and closings every single time because if I try to skip it, my internet lags. It’s best not to mess with it for best results xD

When I watch anime, it HAS to be subbed. I cannot stand dubs even though English is the only language I speak. I tried learning Japanese so I could follow along better but it was too hard.

How do you watch anime…. do you stream it? If you do, what sites work? I’ve been having the hardest time finding free anime to watch. The sites I used to use now make you pay.

      • Thanks for replying, Rose! I used to use Crunchyroll and wasn’t sure if it was still free. Last time I used it, there were a bunch of ads. I have an ad blocker on my laptop so I might try it again. As for Netflix, we don’t have a Netflix subscription anymore. I feel like I am seriously missing out by not having Netflix.

      • We used to have Netflix for a couple of months and decided that we didn’t need it. I know that there’s anime on Netflix so I am wondering if Netflix is worth getting again?

I like the less popular animes that are subbed and are popular in Asia, and less common in America. I also like anime films; I watched “Your Name” for free a while ago but now it seems even harder to stream for free. I tried finding “Weathering with You” but I was unable to stream or download it.😭

      • Hm, I think the anime series on Netflix are pretty popular. They aren’t too many anime shows on there either. I think Crunchyroll would be better, to be honest.

Ah, I watched Weathering With You in the theatres so I haven’t looked online.

  3. I read a plot summary of boring episodes in lieu of watching them.

Sometimes I watch 3 episodes of an anime in one sitting, and then forget about it for the rest of my life.

The only time I’ve ever watched an anime and I enjoyed it from start to finish was Uchouten Kazoku. I didn’t even skip over the openings or endings. Uchouten Kazoku is really, really good.

    • Ohh, I haven’t seen it. Maybe I will check it out since it’s so good!

I read plot summaries of American romantic comedy films. I know I’m not going to watch them. Sometimes, watching the trailer is good enough. It tells the whole plot, hahaha.

  4. I almost never skip the openings/closing songs. I really like them, so I’ll usually watch them each time and only skip them if I’m in a hurry or if I’m watching the show with friends. I generally prefer to watch dubs, but I’ll watch subs if that’s what’s available.

  5. I watch weekly episodes, beginning to end and preferably subbed. Series that I like I then purchase, sometimes binge watching or–as I just did with Lucky Star–watching an episode a day to cheer me up and energize me before I go to work. Favorite series like Flying Witch, Yuru Camp, and Non Non Biyori get re-watched at least a couple of times a year. . .

    • Ohh, interesting that you purchase after you know you like the series. Some of my friends do the same thing. I’ve done the same myself, but for manga. Thanks for sharing!
