Scott recently posted his Husbando post and I expect Nabe to do the same soon.
I’ve been told that I have questionable taste in anime boys. The reason is because I like villains.
Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!
In 2018, I wrote a post called, Why I Love Izaya. You can check it out if you want detailed reasons as to why Izaya is my favourite anime character of all time. Izaya is an antagonist. He’s an underground information broker.
Sharing this again:
J from Bloody Monday
Bloody Monday is an amazing manga. The Japanese live-action is great, too. I love J in Bloody Monday: Last Season the most. That’s Bloody Monday 3, but I liked J since the beginning.
No surprise, but J is an antagonist. He loves melon soda, hence my username. He’s a genius and one of the leaders of an evil group.
Other Characters I Love:
I’m picky. Although I love a lot of characters (Click HERE for my 30 Anime Characters – Appreciation Post!) I’m not sure if I could call these characters my husbandos.
Juuzou Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul
Juuzou is a Special Class Ghoul Investigator, which means he helps humans. I think the lines between good and evil are blurred in Tokyo Ghoul. As humans, are we supposed to view all ghouls as evil?
Xue Yang from Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed
I ship Xue Yang with XXC so that’s why he’s not my husbando. Xue Yang is a villain.
Wow, this post is a lot shorter than I expected. Like I said, I’m picky.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that I love Kaiji and other FKMT series.
Chang and Mario would be on this list if Kaiji got a season three. I am hoping for it to happen…
2) Turtle from Rainbow
Turtle from Rainbow is the best friend one could have. He deserves so much recognition.
3) Ayanokoji from The Classroom of the Elite
I’ve written about Ayanokoji before, but he’s the most unfazed character I’ve seen. Having him as the MC was a breath of fresh air.
4) Seiya from Cautious Hero
Cautious Hero’s a funny anime. You can read my impressions of the first episode here.
5) Mafuyu from Given
Mafuyu’s voice is so good. I’m really impressed with his VA. I can’t wait to watch the Given movie.
6) Tanjiro from Demon Slayer
Tanjiro is so sweet and caring. I’ve written about Tanjiro before (click here to read the post). He inspires me to never give up.
7) Nezuko from Demon Slayer
Nezuko is adorable. She feels the same amount of care towards Tanjiro and she’s very strong.
8) Haru from My Roommate is a Cat
In my review of the anime, I wrote that in the second half of each episode, the story is retold from the cat’s point of view. Haru seems more mature than the human MC in some ways.
9) Naofumi from The Rising of the Shield Hero
Naofumi went through so many cursed events, which resulted in a great change in his personality. He went from being naive to cynical. He was the true hero while the rest did more harm than good.
10) The Queen from Shield Hero
Thanks to the Queen, Naofumi got justice and cleared his name.
11) Levi from Attack on Titan
Who doesn’t like Levi?
12) Izaya from Durarara!!
Izaya is my favourite anime character. I wrote about the reasons I like him in a post. I even have a DRRR ita bag because of him.
13) Sakurai from Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Sakurai is so wholesome.
14) Hirotaka from Wotakoi
15) Mii-kun from How to Keep a Mummy
Mii-kun is adorable.
16) Airi from Erased
Airi’s really cool. I wish we saw more of her.
17) Satoru from Erased
Erased is about a man who goes back in time to prevent a series of murders. He goes back into his body from when he was a child but everything else (memories as an adult, cognitive skills, etc.) remains the same.
18) Aizawa from My Hero Academia
This was a good episode.
19) Conan from Detective Conan
Like Satoru from Erased, Conan is also transformed into a kid.
20) Laboon from One Piece
One Piece has a lot of characters. In fact, there’s over a thousand of them. Here’s a few of them.
21) Chouchou from One Piece
It was characters like Chouchou that made me like One Piece so much.
22) Ace from One Piece
23. Luffy from One Piece
24) Juuzou from Tokyo Ghoul
Juuzou is one of my favourite characters.
25) Ye Xiu from The King’s Avatar
Ye Xiu is a cool protagonist. I really like “starting over” and “secret identity” type of shows.
26) Senku from Dr. Stone
Senku is a genius.
27) Reigen from Mob Psycho
I loved Mob Psycho, especially the second season. I don’t remember the context for this at all…
28) Tokuchi from One Outs
One Outs is a really good psychological anime.
29) Saiki from Saiki
The Japanese VA who voiced Seiki also voiced Izaya and Levi. I love his characters.
30) Twelve from Zankyou no Terror
The bike scene in this anime is amazing.
Two-thirds of these characters are main characters. To me, a likeable protagonist makes all the difference.
So I started watching The Classroom of the Elite and I am hooked. It’s from 2017, so I am surprised I didn’t know about the anime earlier. They present a quote at the beginning of every episode. I thought that the quote for episode 4 was very interesting.
I also have other quotes that support this thought.
Do not expect people to tell you the truth because they also lie to themselves.” – Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements
No one is truly honest…Even if we don’t lie to others, we often lie to ourselves. And the word good means different things to different people.”
Lastly, my favourite anime character, Izaya Orihara from Durarara!! talks about this in episode 2.
In regard to “Everyone’s the same” I do not believe he is referring to equality. The Classroom of the Elite talks about equality. I do not believe that humans are equal, nor do I think that humans are born equal. What I believe Izaya is talking about is specific to the context (see next screenshot).
OK, but why am I even writing about this?? Let’s just say that I think a lot, so much that my head might explode if I don’t write things down. I’m joking, of course.
To see a show talk about the things I think about is pretty sweet, as if my thoughts are being validated.
I was reading the Durarara!! light novel volume 1 and on page 184, Izaya says the following to Mikado:
“But while you may be dreaming of a life outside the bounds of normality, life in Tokyo will become normal after you’ve been here for a year. … If you truly want to escape the ordinary, you’ll simply need to keep evolving – whether what you seek is above or below.”
Mikado thinks that this is painful to hear because of how well he understood what Izaya meant. If he was unhappy with his life now, would he just keep searching for a new life forever?
Reading this was painful for me too. This made me think about the time I wrote about desire and how sufferingrelates to desire. Back to Izaya – what does he mean by evolving? I thought I knew, but I’m not sure anymore. Any thoughts?
P.S. I’m reading The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. I read parts of it a few years ago for a Psychology class. I’m just reading it for fun now since I already have my BA in Psych. The book is about evolution, natural selection and altruism… so maybe that’s why I thinking about Izaya’s definition of evolving.

I’ll stick with 2D boys because musicians and actors are a whole other post.
1. Uta from Tokyo Ghoul
Okay, for context Uta is a ghoul and ghouls eat humans. I like anime characters with piercings and I have a few ear piercings myself (7 in total).
2. Xue Yang from Mo Dao Zu Shi
I would classify Xue Yang as a yandere. My favourite character archetype is yandere.
***Yanderes are really problematic and I don’t agree with what they do. People that have yandere-like characteristics in real life are extremely toxic and I recognize that. However, my favourite characters in fictional stories are mostly villains and I think that yanderes make stories more interesting if it is done well.***
3. Juuzou Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul
Juuzou is my favourite character in Tokyo Ghoul. He has a unique appearance and did his stitches himself. I like unique-looking characters because they seem more authentic(?) – Characters that aren’t afraid of being themselves.
4. Izaya Orihara from Durarara!!
Izaya is my number one favourite anime character. I wrote a post outlining the reasons why I like him lolol (Click here to read it).
5. Doppo from Hypnosis Mic
Doppo is a salaryman and pessimist. I like his hair.
Besides Uta (I feel neutral about him), I really like the remaining four characters. It’s not just appearance but their personalities as well. Or I find them really interesting characters. Appearance and personality generally go hand-in-hand for me.
I’m going to open this up for anyone who wants to do this tag. 🙂
Izaya Orihara is my favourite anime character. When I tell this to people who have watched Durarara!! they usually ask me why I love him. One friend told me he would punch Izaya if he met him in person. Even my brother does not like Izaya.
Let’s start with who he is. Izaya is an underground information broker. He’s one of the main antagonists in the series and he basically caused most of the drama and violence, which is why a lot of people don’t like him.
I do think that Izaya is attractive, but there’s so much more to it than that. Good looks may be enough for me to make him my favourite character in DRRR but not enough for him to be my favourite character of all time!
Let’s start with looks first. I do have a “type” in anime boys LOL and they are boys with dark hair. Lelouch from Code Geass, Ikuto from Shugo Chara, Lucifer from Devil is a Part-Timer, Levi from Attack on Titan, and Yato from Noragami are other examples of this. I used to like boys with long white hair and boys with red hair but now it’s black or purple hair. I like Izaya’s clothes and the rings he wears. I like how he carries a knife around, especially with all the gang violence going on in Ikebukuro. I mean, he is responsible for almost all the drama LOL. I love his voice (Japanese) too.
People tell me that Izaya is crazy and I can see why they say that. He did stomp on a girl’s cellphone just for fun. I also have a history of liking characters who do questionable things, especially since most of my favourite characters are villains. Tomura from My Hero Academia, Hidan from Naruto Shippuden, and Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul are also my favourite characters. I like villains because they make the story interesting. What would a story be without an antagonist?
I have to make this clear though: Just because I like a FICTIONAL character, does not mean I agree or support everything they do. It just means that I like them. I’m not going to justify Izaya’s actions in this post.
Another thing that makes me love an anime character is intelligence. Conan from Detective Conan, Light and L from Death Note, Shikamaru from Naruto, and Lelouch are intelligent characters that make the show interesting. Although it is often overlooked, Izaya is very intelligent. He is successful at what he does and is the manipulative mastermind behind many of the misunderstandings that happened in DRRR.
What really made me like him were his quotes and his philosophy on life. Every time I truly fall for a character or celebrity, it’s because they made a real impact on my life.
Prior to watching DRRR, I was quick to judge other peoples’ faults without checking myself. How can I expect those close to me to be perfect human beings if I have faults myself? It was a reality check and I do think it changed my outlook on life. I accepted the parts I didn’t like about certain people and I felt happier.
His quote on evolving is one of my favourite quotes. I love how unexpected events make Izaya laugh. Spoiler alert: Izaya has been robbed, stabbed and kidnapped but he just rolls with it.
When something doesn’t go the way I planned it to, I just need to remind myself to “evolve” and then I can change my entire outlook of the situation. Then I am back to normal. Lately I’ve been forgetting to remind myself of this quote but when I do think about it, I change my mindset and I feel so much better!
One of the reasons why I love the game, Catherine (I wrote about it in a previous blog post) is because I had to continuously adapt to the circumstances in order to survive. It’s a similar concept.
I don’t believe in God. Because he doesn’t have a fixed form. The past certainly does exist, even in a world where the future doesn’t have a fixed form. Even if it’s being colored by misunderstandings and delusions, a person’s past can’t be anything but the truth as long as he believes in it. If that’s what you base your actions or your way of life on, isn’t that like being god?” – Izaya Orihara
Interpret this quote as you will, but it helped me. I am an atheist, but it’s the last part of the quote that’s more important to me. Prior to watching and reading DRRR manga and light novels, I let something that I did affect me for a couple of years. The quote helped me realize that I didn’t want the past to control me like that anymore and afterwards I became much happier.
Izaya’s favourite quote is the following:
It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.” – Oscar Wilde
I agree with Wilde’s quote, and it’s similar to my blog’s name, Wretched and Divine. I have been asked why my blog is named ‘Wretched and Divine’ so I will address that now! It’s named after an album by Black Veil Brides. Andy Biersack, singer of BVB, sums it up.
I think on any given day somebody could help out a homeless person and cuss out somebody that cut them off in traffic and I think that everybody has that inside them, it’s just how you live that balance – so I think everybody is ‘Wretched and Divine.’ – Andy Biersack
Back to Izaya – Izaya and I think about a lot of the same things. Not only that, but his quotes got me to think and see life a little bit differently.
Izaya does things for fun. My favourite singer, Hua Chenyu is similar because he doesn’t care what others think and is individualistc. Hua Chenyu once talked about changing your mindset when you cannot make up your own rules in a structured environment. It’s the reality of the real world, while DRRR is fiction. One of the reasons why I love One Piece is because the main characters are pirates, and can do what they want. I feel like these people are the most authentic. Anyways, this might be confusing, lol.
A bit random, but Izaya and I both dislike sweets and like sushi and bitter foods. (I like bitter melon a lot.) He also has a cute side to him!
