Anime Wrap Up for 2019

You can read my 2018 Anime Wrap Up post here. These are the anime series, OVAs and movies I have completed so far in 2019. I am pretty quick to drop shows/put them on hold, so these ones are anime I liked a lot.

Seasonal Anime Series I’ve Completed in 2019

* Carole & Tuesday – This anime gave us so many beautiful songs. The latter part of the show was really interesting and the final episode was beautifully done.

* Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. (My Roommate is a Cat) – I am normally not a fan of Slice of Life anime, but this one is an exception. It deals with issues that are really important and portrays life in such a simple yet interesting way.

* Given – One of my top two Boys Love anime. I cried for days, the music was so beautiful, and I blogged about my reaction to a specific episode.

* Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen – Good, but not one of my favourites from the season.

* Kakegurui×× – Sucked, except for one particular episode. It failed to create feelings of fear or anxiety. The first season was better. Watch Kaiji instead.

* Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) – I felt really inspired by Tanjirou’s resilience and dedication. I blogged about that here.

* Mob Psycho 100 II – I was really impressed by Season 2. I thought it was a lot better than the first season.

* Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 Part 2 – This is probably my favourite season of Attack on Titan. The beginning episodes were terrifying.

* Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (Shield Hero) – I really enjoyed Shield Hero and enjoyed writing about my thoughts on each episode. You can find Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

* Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) – Very interesting anime. I enjoyed it a lot.

* Dr. Stone – I thought this was pretty interesting overall. I can’t wait for Season 2.

Non-Seasonal Anime Series I’ve Completed in 2019

* B: The Beginning – I recommend this series. The latter episodes were brilliant and the ending song is amazing.

* Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (Parasyte) – I really enjoyed this anime. The opening song by Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is great.

* Mob Psycho 100 – I enjoyed this one more than I expected, especially near the end.

* Tokyo Ghoul √A – This is the second season of Tokyo Ghoul. Juuzou is my favourite character in Tokyo Ghoul, so I really enjoyed watching his interactions with Shinohara and watching his character growth. Beautiful music throughout.

* Zankyou no Terror – One of my top three anime. I think it’s highly underrated. After I completed this anime, it left a void for me for a while.

* Ore Monogatari!! – One of my favourite romance anime. If I had to describe the anime with one word: wholesome.

OVAs I’ve Completed in 2019

* Durarara!!x2 Shou: Watashi no Kokoro wa Nabe Moyou – This was really nice to watch. For context, I finished Durarara!! in 2017 so it brought back pleasant memories.

* Durarara!!x2 Ten: Onoroke Chakapoko – Special episode on Shinra and Celty. It’s not necessary to watch this, but it’s good if you are a Durarara!! fan.

* Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii: Youth – A look at what Koyanagi and Kabakura were like in high school. Koyanagi had short hair!

Anime Movies I’ve Completed in 2019

* Tokyo Godfathers – I watched this at the end-of-year event with Anime Club. I probably wouldn’t have watched this on my own time, but it’s a really good film. I’m glad I watched it.

In the near future, I will finish watching Babylon and My Hero Academia Season 4. Thanks for sticking with me this year! See you next year!

Winter 2019 Anime: Closing Thoughts

The Promised Neverland

Synopsis: Emma and Norman are orphans who learn that they’re being raised as livestock for demons to eat. Together with Ray, they devise strategies on ways to escape the orphanage.

Thoughts: This was my favourite anime from the season. I highly recommend watching it. Every episode was suspenseful and there were so many cliffhangers. I can’t wait to see what happens next in season 2 in 2020! You can read my first episode impressions post here.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Poor Ishigami

Synopsis: Kaguya and Shirogami like each other, but they are too prideful to admit it. Each episode is on them trying to get the other to confess.

Thoughts: This show had likable characters. Kaguya, Chika, Ishigami and Hayasaka were all great characters. Ishigami is easily my favourite character from the season, maybe because I can relate to his struggles. The last episode was sweet to watch. I liked how they involved all the characters and not just the two main leads. I was frustrated with how the show ended because I wanted to see more progress in Kaguya and Shirogane’s relationship, but this is a slice-of-anime anime so it’s not surprising. Kaguya-sama had great opening and ending songs.

My Roommate is a Cat

Synopsis: Mikazuki is a writer who doesn’t like going outside or interacting with people. His parents passed away in an accident and he lives by himself. Mikazuki meets a stray cat and takes her in for inspiration for his novel.

Thoughts: I enjoyed this anime a lot. I wrote about this show in more depth, which you can read here. The themes were on friendship and new beginnings. The last episode was really sweet and I liked that the focus was on Mikazuki and Haru, his cat. I recommend this anime if you like cats.

Kakegurui xx

Kakegurui XX - OP - Large 05.jpg

Synopsis: This is the second season of Kakegurui, a gambling anime. The school is hosting a competition in which the student with the most points will become the school president. Yumeko is challenged by a number of students, each wanting to win.

Thoughts: Season one was good, but I didn’t really enjoy season two. The games lacked feeling. When I watched Kaiji I felt anxious and was filled with worry and dread. I didn’t feel any of that with Kakegurui xx. There was a very beautiful episode on Kiari and Sayaka’s relationship, but that was the only memorable thing about the show. The winner of the competition has yet to be to be determined.

Anime Wrap Up for 2018

Most of the anime I watched this year were not seasonal anime. Non-anime shows and movies, shows I dropped, put on hold, and shows I’m currently watching are excluded from this post. I’m also probably missing some titles.

Anime Series I’ve Completed in 2018

* Koi wa Ameagari no You ni (After the Rain) – I’ve reviewed this beautiful anime, which you can read about in this post.

* Violet Evergarden – I highly recommend this stunning anime because it will tug on your heartstrings.

* Shingeki no Kyojin Season 3 (Attack on Titan Season 3) – I was disappointed when they stopped airing season 3 halfway, when it was reportedly supposed to have over 20 episodes.

Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor – Kaiji is my third favourite anime, and the best psychological anime I’ve seen.

* Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Hakairoku-hen – This is the second season of Kaiji.

* Touhai Densetsu Akagi: Yami ni Maiorita Tensai – This is by the same creator of Kaiji, and the focus is on mahjong.

* One Outs – This is by the same creator of the manga, Liar Game. It’s a psychological baseball anime.

* Steins;Gate – This was difficult to get into, and my opinion of it did not change halfway through, contrary to what others were telling me.

* Tokyo Ghoul – The beginning was slow, but last episode was amazing. It has the best anime opening. I reviewed the last episode, which you can read here.

* Inuyashiki – This is one of my favourite anime. It’s not as heavy as Gantz, but there are mass murders.

* Kamisama no Memochou (Heaven’s Memo Pad) – The last episode left a lasting impression on me. I’ve reviewed this anime, which you can read here.

* Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori (Hell Girl Season 2) – This was a great anime, and the latter of the series was super interesting. I reviewed this series in this post.

* Jigoku Shoujo: Yoi no Togi (Hell Girl: The Fourth Twilight) – I wouldn’t recommend this one, unless you are an avid fan of Hell Girl. I reviewed this series in this post.

* Sakamoto Desu ga? – A good watch if you’re looking for comedy or slice of life.

* Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased) – I absolutely loved this anime, and it’s a series I can binge. The ending is too rushed, but the Netflix live-action adaptation does a better job with the ending,

* Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa – This is a spin-off featuring the antagonists from Kaiji, Tonegawa and Ootsuki. It is a comedy, and has made me laugh on several occasions. I looked forward it every week. You can read my Tonegawa post here and Ootsuki post here.

Boku no Hero Academia 3rd Season – I had to take a break from it because of the hype, but I’m really glad I returned to it. There were uninteresting parts, but it became really good afterwards. I’m looking forward to the fourth season.

Anime Movies I’ve Completed in 2018

* Ghost in the Shell – Unpopular opinion, but I don’t like Ghost in the Shell.

* Metropolis – Unpopular opinion, but I don’t like Osamu Tezuka’s works.

* Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) – Not my favourite Studio Ghibli film…

* Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name) – This is probably my favourite anime film. The colours are beautiful and the music is memorable.

* A Silent Voice – I’m sorry, but I liked Kimi no Na wa. better.

* Steins;Gate Movie: Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu – This film made me like Steins;Gate. I was seriously so impressed by it.

* Boku no Hero Academia the Movie: Futari no Hero – I watched this one in the movie theatres, and it was really good. I liked the focus on All Might, but I wish that Froppy played a major role.

* Saint☆Oniisan (Movie) – I need more!

* Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa (Castle in the Sky) – The music is what got me interested in this film. It’s not my favourite Studio Ghibli film, but the ending is great.

Special Episodes I’ve Completed in 2018

maxresdefault

* Steins;Gate: Oukoubakko no Poriomania – This didn’t leave an impression on me.

* Steins;Gate: Kyoukaimenjou no Missing Link – Divide By Zero – Sets up the stage for Steins;Gate 0.

* Violet Evergarden: Kitto “Koi” wo Shiru Hi ga Kuru no Darou – I reviewed this beautiful special episode, which you can read here.

OVAs I’ve Completed in 2018

* Saint☆Oniisan – Jesus and Buddha go on vacation in modern day Japan and they are roommates. This is comedy, and it made me laugh out loud.

I’ll probably complete Ore Monogatari!! since we have a little over a week left in 2018.

Thank you for reading my blog this year and in previous years, and I look forward to reviewing more anime in 2019!
