Superstar Spotlight: Hua Chenyu

Hua Chenyu 华晨宇 is a famous Chinese singer. Most of the information online about him are in Chinese, so I decided to write a post in English for non-Chinese speakers (and for everybody to know about him). He is currently my favourite singer.

Nickname: Hua Hua 花花 (means ‘flower’)

Fans’ name: Huo Xing Ren 火星人 (Martian)

After he posted photos with the monkey on his Weibo, the toy ran out of stock.

I first learned about him through a Facebook video that was shared on my homepage. It was him performing his song, My Skateboard Shoes 我的滑板鞋. I thought his rapping was impressive. Afterwards I decided to find more music by him and found the song, Ashes from Firework 烟火里的尘埃. He has a very powerful voice, especially when he performs live.

I like that his music is comprised of different genres, such as pop, alternative rock, folk and classical music. The fact that he is capable of singing to this wide range of music shows that he is talented.

My favourite song by him is Quasimodo’s Gift 卡西莫多的礼物. Quasimodo is a fictional character from the novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Everyone calls Quasimodo “hideous” because of his deformities, and as a result he experiences deep loneliness. In the song, Hua Chenyu sings  “Quasimodo’s gift is to enjoy the loneliness” 卡西莫多的礼物 享受孤独. This is my favourite part because he helped me realize that loneliness is not necessarily a bad thing. Often times, we associate ‘lonely’ with negative feelings but to be able to enjoy it is actually quite nice. I can relate to aloneness very well from my personal life, and the moment you begin to enjoy is really an eye-opening experience. Practicing self-love, and finding your own interests and passions are just a couple of reasons why this is important.

Hua Chenyu is someone I consider authentic. Authenticity is something I look for because a lot of artists create content for the sake of being more popular. Hua Chenyu does not care about that (he even has a song called, I Don’t Care 我管你).

Despite being famous, he is an introvert and that’s why his first album was dedicated to the topic of loneliness. He also has some quirks which differentiates from other celebrities. He does not try to hide who he really is. Hua Chenyu promotes the idea of being true to yourself, even if others do not like it.

He loves to watches anime!

My Dream Crate

Loot Crate is a popular monthly subscription box service. Basically, you choose which crate you want (there’s anime, superhero, video game themed and other geeky gift ideas and subscriptions) and every month a box of 4-6 items arrive at your door! It’s a pleasant surprise to find out which items you got. Here’s an example so you know what I’m talking about.

Loot Crate reached out to me and asked me to come up with my dream Loot Crate. Since I love anime, my dream crate is anime themed. The box probably won’t be able to to fit a body pillow of Roronoa Zoro from One Piece, so I’ll leave this item out. I would totally want to get one though. 😛

1. Tickets to Japan.

LOL. If this is my dream crate, and my dream is to go to Japan and eat white strawberries and cosplay there then… this is the first thing I want!

…But if we are being a little more realistic, THIS is what I want.

Sailor Moon compact mirror

I showed this to my girlfriends and they want one too. Guys can use it as well because it’s practical, or they can give it to their girlfriend, sister, daughter, friend, co-worker, or classmate.

2. Levi Ackerman nendoroid from Attack on Titan

My only requirement is that I get the Cleaning Version.

3. One Piece flag

In my imagined dream anime fan room, this is definitely one of the things I want.

4. Ken Kaneki mask from Tokyo Ghoul

This is something I want for cosplay purposes, and I am hoping to get it one day!

5. Yuri!! on Ice socks

I love socks lol. If I could pick what gift people give me for my birthday or Christmas, I would ask for CUTE socks. They’re so practical!

Yuri!! on Ice socks are cute, and I would really appreciate having this in my crate.

6. Rem mug from Re:Zero

Mugs are practical. I want to be able to have things I can actually use in my crate. When I have the time to watch anime, I spend days without leaving the house (true story). I lock myself in my room and end up with like 5 cups in my room. You can never have too many mugs. Rem is so cute!

Jiro Wang 汪東城 List of Anime Cosplays

I originally wanted to find a blog post with an updated list of Jiro’s anime cosplays. Unfortunately, I did not find it. I decided to take matters into my own hands and write one myself! (It also helps that I am an anime fan and know the characters.)

Purikura!

Today I will be blogging about purikura! Purikura photos are VERY popular in Japan. If I lived in Japan I would get purikura all the time after school. My classmates and I would be in school uniforms and I can only imagine my legwarmers already. I would have a scrapbook of purikura stickers and I can just imagine myself giving my crush homemade chocolate in a box tied by a string… WHAT CRUSH. This is what watching anime and reading manga does to you. This is what Japan does to you. There are photo booths in arcades and malls and even here in Canada where I live. You can find these kind of photo booths around. The only problem here is that the booths are expensive! Not really haha but eight dollars for a photo!? Geez… What’s so cool about purikura photos versus normal photo booths are the many accessories you can add to it. Firstly, the camera makes your face super cute. It’s pretty hot in the rooms and all your face zits or moles or whatever just disappear, just like that. Once you’ve taken your photos, you add your accessories and there are a lot to choose from. Here are a couple of examples of me with my friends. This were taken in two and one year ago:

Image

This one was taken two years ago. I am in the purple.

purikura-2

This was taken one year ago. I’m in the front with my tongue sticking out. I think I was in my own world or something when the one year ago photos were taken. Apparently I had a different expression than everyone else in all the photos… That’s just who I am – I’m often daydreaming or zoning out into my trail of thoughts.

The next post will be purikura… right in your phone! There are many apps you can use and I will be talking about three. I will most likely make the next post today. Keep on reading!
