Chinjao’s Grudge in One Piece

Please understand that this is my personal view. Opinions are my own.

If you’ve watched the Dressrosa Arc in One Piece, you’ll be familiar with Chinjao, an older character who had a grudge on Garp over an incident that happened many, many years ago. Because Luffy is Garp’s grandson, Chinjao hated Luffy too. Luffy yelled back and said that he had nothing to do with the incident and I thought that was so powerful. This scene reminded me of Japan’s and China’s strained relationship.

If you do not have knowledge on the Nanjing Massacre or Unit 731, it would be helpful to read up on those incidents to understand the context of this post. If you are a child, read about those events when you are older!!! Basically, the Japanese military committed atrocious acts during the Second Sino-Japanese War against Chinese and Korean people. Today, the Japanese government has not taken steps to properly acknowledge those acts. It’s one of the big reasons why Japan and China do not have a good relationship today.

Back to One Piece – Luffy yelled that he had nothing to do with Chinjao’s grudge and after their fight, Chinjao and Luffy were on good terms because Luffy made the situation better. I thought this was a very positive message, that we should not hate people who were not directly involved in the incident. We should never forget about the Nanjing Massacre, but I have hope that the current and future generations will work together so that Japan and China can have a good relationship.

Here is the class writing assignment. “It is just before the 2020 Olympics: Japan’s government will capitulate and admit Japan’s actions in East Asia during the war.

Now write the speech for him. What will you say?”

I want 1200 words on this by Thursday. Oh, and I will not be in my office on Wednesday. Leave your essay with the departmental secretary and she will put it in my mailbox.
