Mo Dao Zu Shi is a super popular show right now, based on the Chinese web novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. Chinese animated shows have been gaining popularity these recent years, with King’s Avatar and now this one. Fun fact: Wei Wuxian is voiced by the same actor who voiced Ye Xiu in King’s Avatar.
Synopsis: Wei Wuxian was the powerful grandmaster who founded the Demonic Sect. He finds himself incarnated as the son of a servant. An evil spirit is killing people and needs to be defeated. A mysterious person shows up at the end…
It might be a little confusing at first. I don’t need subtitles, but I found them to go quickly. I read online that someone became interested in learning Chinese because of this show, which speaks a little about its influence.
I became interested in it because it’s a BL series. It’s much more than that. There is a ton of action and a lot of other things going on. I think anyone could like this show, even if they are not into BL.Β The animation is breathtaking! Some of the background shots look like real life, and I feel like I’m watching a historical drama. Every song is so beautiful. I do think this a high-quality show. You can bet I will be watching the next episode.
A note about BL in Mo Dao Zu Shi: Some people could argue that it is not a BL series because there are no explicit indications of that. From my understanding, there are subtle hints instead, which is due to China’s ban of homosexual relationships depicted in the media.
Back in 2016 when the popular Chinese drama Addicted was released, all the kiss scenes were cut and the show was discontinued. I’m Chinese myself, and I strongly believe that media should not be censored, and everyone deserves the right to be married in China.
China has crazy laws now since the recent one cause a lot of artist in China to delete NSFW art from lofter and weibo

The animation for this looks beautiful. I don’t mind BL narratives, it’s when they go into yaoi territory that I tend to get put-off (maybe because it’s too graphic for me haha). I saw this on CR and was on the fence about trying it, but I think I shall now that i know it’s historical too. Thanks for sharing it!

Ohh you don’t have to worry about that with this one because they seem like really close friends who care about one another (due to China’s regulations).
Thanks for sharing this and my Peach Girl review on Twitter! β

Good that you like the genre — you GO girl.
It sure is not for me, but I consider the ladies who like the genre to be friends. (I understand.)
I’m more about the girl-girl stories. I actually would prefer it if there were no schlongs involved at all. Or even anywhere in the zip code.
RE: ” Chinaβs ban of homosexual relationships depicted in the media.”
… and this may be off topic …
Ahem, This surprises me. as I would think that the monolith would encourage it.
Especially after the “One Child Policy” resulted in the killing/elimination of tens of millions of girls.
There are tens of millions of “missing” Chinese women in the world today.
Those evil pricks at the top killed the best thing that this world has ever come up with.
I consider what happened to China’s girls to be one of humanities greatest crimes … YAAAH … (Denny kicks over trash can).

Thanks π Yuri is cool. Love is love! Ahh, I guess China is very tranditional in that sense by banning BL. I know that in ancient China, homosexual relationships were common so it got reversed…
I know that some Hollywood celebrities are banned from entering China too. Yeah, there’s an overrepresention of Chinese girls in orphanages which is so sad. π¦

Sometime I might tell you the tale about the bar fight I once had with the 700 million PR Chinese men.
If I had George Soro’s money I would adopt every abandoned Chinese baby girl. Then I would build one of those floating islands in the South China Sea and create my own country. Yeah, I would probably ban Hollywood celebrities there too.

Thanks for the share! I would just like to make a small correction. It’s based on a web novel, not graphic novel. XD

Hmm, not interested in this personally to watch but the bigger picture stuff surrounding the show is interesting. King’s Avatar interests me, I just wish I could watch it. Thanks for sharing π

I understand what you mean! I watched King’s Avatar on YouTube and there were English subtitles. I’m not sure if the episodes are still there, but it was uploaded by the company!
