Seasonal Anime Impressions – Summer 2018

Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan Season 3

I loved the first season, but thought the second season wasn’t as good because everything was condensed into 12 episodes. For the third season we will have 24 episodes, which sounds promising already. Attack on Titan lives up to the hype.

As of right now, three episodes have been released. The season started off with a strong beginning. It was different, but different in a good way. The first two episodes were filled with action, and the animation is amazing. Levi didn’t get a lot of scenes in the second season, but his fans will be very happy with this season. Yesterday’s episode (episode 3) didn’t have a lot of action, but it gave us important background information. It was still an enjoyable episode. Attack on Titan Season 3 is definitely my favourite anime from this summer season.

I dropped this show after four episodes, but heard that the fifth episode was better. From what I heard, it’s still not a very good anime. If you want to read a more in-depth post on my reasons for dropping this anime, click here!

Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes/Holmes of Kyoto

I am enjoying this anime, and am caught up (five episodes have been released so far). I am aware that some anime bloggers think the show is boring. It’s not the most interesting show, and it does have its dull moments. However, I’m learning about Japanese artwork, artists, history, and festivals from watching the show. It is informative, and it’s a pleasant watch. If you’re into this sort of thing like me, then you might like it.

Hataraku Saibou/Cells at Work!

This is one of the more popular shows from this season. Watching the show motivates me to take care of myself more because the cells are doing their best. I thought the first episode was extremely predictable, but I still enjoyed it.

It is educational too. The Infinite Zenith wrote a post on the anime’s accuracy after I asked him to take a look at it. Please check it out! It’s extremely detailed and it’s one of my favourite blog posts.

I liked the first episode, but I will wait until all the episodes are out because I don’t want the hype to ruin for me. It happened with Yuri on Ice… The anime is based on an older manga from the 1980s. The clothing style, architecture, art style and general vibe were refreshing to see in a new anime.

I’ve only seen the first two episodes, but I’m enjoying it. The protagonist gives off Yuno Gasai vibes (from Mirai Nikki) but I love yandere characters. ^_^ Although the title sounds sweet, it’s twisted and all the characters are messed up. It’s ridiculous but entertaining. It does have disturbing scenes so if you are young, do not watch this!

Boku no Hero Academia/My Hero Academia 3rd Season (continuing)

I stopped watching this because of the summer anime season, but I will continue it once all the episodes are out. I think I’ll enjoy it more once the excitement over it dies a little… It is a great shonen, and there are many likable characters.

  1. Haven’t had a chance to see Hataraku Saibou or Happy Sugar Life yet.

I try to isolate myself from hype. It creates impossible expectations and then the people who listened to it are disappointed.

    • That’s what I’m trying to do too. Hype kind of made me like Yuri on Ice and My Hero Academia less, which is why I’m waiting for Banana Fish and MHA to be completed. It really does create impossible expectations, like you said. Also I feel like just seeing anything that I’m not very interested in appear too many times makes me a little tired of it – it’s similar to listening to the same song play on the radio over and over again.

      • Sometimes it really irks me to have watched a show that has been hyped to death but that I didn’t enjoy. I usually watch several episodes before I give up on it completely, figuring there HAD to be some redeeming quality after so much publicity. It is like I wasted all that time which could have been put to use in far better ways.

      • Ah, I experienced that with Steins;Gate. I heard so many good things about it, and forced myself to watch several episodes of it even though I wasn’t enjoying it. Several hours later, and I still didn’t like it. I dropped it, but feel that it was a waste of time… :/

  2. Attack on Titan so far has been absolutely incredible! If this continues like this, it might become the best season of the entire series.
Yeah Angels of Death was better this week, which is not saying much. It’s still not a very good show, but as I have now invested time in five episodes I won’t drop it (which I always find hard to do anyway, dropping shows 😂😂

    • I have high hopes for Attack on Titan!

Haha, I am fairly quick to drop shows. It’s fine with me because I can continue them anytime. There are soooo many shows I watch to watch but limited time, so dropping shows allows me to get to the other shows.

    • I hope AoT has improved. I was getting bored.

I won’t drop a show after the first episode or two unless it is irredeemably horrid. But if there is no improvement by ep 3 or 4, I drop it like a hot rock.

      • Haha, I always have a big problem when it comes to dropping shows. Quite honestly? I almost never drop them (yes, I know…I am weak lol 😂😂).
As fo AOT, it’s been amazing so far. If this continues in this way, it will become the best season that’s been released 😊😊

      • AoT has definitely improved! Season 2 wasn’t very good, so I can see why you felt bored.

Your process for dropping shows makes sense~

  3. AoT this season has been incredible, such a vast improvement over S2 and I’m so happy for it. Kyoto of Holmes is slow, but I am loving all of the information that’s in the show, and honestly, it’s just my kinda show. 🙂

    • I agree with what you said about AOT!

I’m not surprised you like Holmes of Kyoto, given the fact that you read books on Japanese history and related topics. I really like the relationship between the two main characters. Holmes is way better than her old friends and I felt satisfied after watching episode 4, when he helped her.

  4. Really interesting to hear your thoughts on the season so far.

I’m also really enjoying Attack on Titan S3 so far, it’s been a huge step up from the last season and the story is a lot more engaging this time around!

Happy Sugar Life is also my Anime of the Season at the moment, so it makes me happy to see someone else praise it! I also love Yandere characters and Yuno is a waifu, so the Yuno vibes have been great! Hopefully the show keeps doing what it’s doing!

Enjoy the rest of the season, Rose! ^_^

    • Thanks Leth! 😀 I always looking forward to the next week’s AoT.

Haha, it’s nice to see a fellow Yandere lover. I’m going to be watching more episodes of Happy Sugar Life later today and tomorrow, so I’m looking forward to that.

Thank you! You too!!! Thanks for the dropping by.
